Josh

What is going on at this very moment? Probably sitting in a dark and empty museum.

The claim is to attempt to restore it if the money and all planets align. Regardless, don't expect anything soon, if at all.

What updates that I have seen were posted on the facebook page.  Simply stated they conducted a preliminary examination of 611 and found her to be in very good condition, donations have been coming in nicely from many countries and about 3 weeks ago they stated they would have more information in approx 45 days from then....sooo possibly in May there will be an update of greater detail.

Actually, she's in a very nice and well-protected, and accessible-to-the-public train shed with her sister, the 1218.

Allan,

The original poster posted the question of what is going on with it at this very moment at 10PM or so last night....most likely sitting in an empty and dark museum at that hour! I'm well aware it sits in a nice and accessible location during business hours.

I would hope that 611 has enough faithful followers that will donate to see her run again. I paid mine in cash at the museum in March.
611 was stored very carefully by the steam crew in '94, with every effort they could do to make it easier to restore her to service again... someday.

don't be suprise if she run in 2016...that will be the year for the steamers..since alot of RR want to get theres going again to cordnate with UP anaversry..

Why would NS want to restore, or at least support the restoration and operation, of a N&W steam locomotive to commemorate the Union Pacific's anniversary?

With UP's Anniversary behind us, regardlessly, why would their competitors want to join in on celebrating their accomplishments?

Now just why would ANY other railroad want to "join in on the event"????

A lot of railroads?  Except for regionals, there aren't that many left.

So, let's look at the biggies that are left...

NS will be doing things with the 765 this year and something might happen with the 611.

UP has 844, 3985 and something might happen with a Big Boy.

BNSF doesn't appear to be interested.

CP seems to be ready to ax theirs, if they haven't already.

CN apparently doesn't have an interest.

CSX is a definite NO.

KCS doesn't have any.  As I recall, the only surviving KCS steam locomotive is an 0-8-0.

And as far as anything currently under restoration, there's no guarantee they'll be allowed to run on their home rails.

We had several big hitters here in the 1990s for one.  Awesome! I put like 10k miles on my car that weekend...and shot like 500 rolls of kodachrome.  Couldn't help it with the 1218/1522 Dbl Header!

Thankyou Rob!!..you made a good point!!!.....Somebody forgot other biggie SP steam engine's that are still running today..2472,4449,745..2019 could be a big year for the steamers..

Didn't the 745 group have a major issue with the engine (crown sheet and/or fusible plug issues come to mind?) and basically give KCS the single finger salute?

The 4449 is also out for the time being.

You never know..It would be a killer get together!..To see these awsome steamers..

On the other hand, since Mr. Moreman would be retired from the NS by then, the whole NS "21st Century Steam Program" could be dead and gone by then too.

One.  Southern Pacific.  But we are 17 years after the UP merger!

But remember, you have to two sets of money:  Get her running, and keep her running!
