Usually I'll take a day off from work on my actual birthday (January 9), and do a day trip somewhere.  I try to do either train related (RR Museum of PA, Martin Guitar Factory, etc) and this year I was thinking of driving up to Steamtown for the day.

Has anyone been there in January or thereabouts?  Is there much going on?  I'm OK as long as it's open, but wanted to see if anyone had past experiences to share.

Last year when I went to the RR Museum of PA, I lucked out.  It was a weekday, virtually no one was there, and I had the run of the place to myself!  I was able to have some great train conversation with the museum staff and really look at stuff at a nice, relaxed pace!

Beginning January 2, the hours of operation at Steamtown change from 9 to 5 to 9 to 4. The park is open everyday, but a snowstorm may delay opening or shut the park down.  There will be no trains operating this January, and we have never run to Moscow in January. For a few years, we ran the Saturday of Martin Luther King Jr. weekend to Tobyhanna for an Ice Harvest Festival at the Mill Pond number 1.This will not happen in 2015.

Walking tours of the locomotive shop are offered each day at 10:30 and 2:30.  They normally take 1 hour.  If there is snow or ice on the rolling stock, it definitely can make for terrific photos, so remember your camera.

Your $7.00 park admission gives you access to the 60 acres of land to view and explore.  The above photo was taken January 4 of this year.

Here's the January 2015 schedule. MLK day is free admission. There are other free admission days throughout the year. My wife and I are planning to go in January.
