Peter Egan's article, The Tracks and the Road, on page 74, the Feb. Road and Track, is delightful, all about trains, hobo jungles, and trying to recapture the nostalgia of the railroad industry from a bygone era.

I've been an avid sports car nut and Road and Track subscriber since I used to draw Ferrari and GT-40s in study hall 48 years ago.  From time to time R&T has thrown a curve to readers with an article on railroading - pointing out to those who objected that the first word in their title was "track."  Over the years I have come to really like these articles, the best of which is maybe the "track test" in the April-fool's 1966 issue, which was billed on the cover as "the most powerful vehicle we've ever tested" - a Gresley A3 Pacific.  Those who have never read it, well, it's a treat:

About 20 years ago Car and Driver had a review of the GM SD-60 loco, the article was titled "Basic Training".  Used to have a copy of the article but no longer have it. Remember they had a bunch of specs, saying how the SD-60 can crank out enough power for 200 average size houses and so forth.  Wish I could find a copy online, was a pretty neat article.
