That is pretty common as they don't do it too much now Just call Jeff and he will send another
Try a new battery, make sure the connections to the battery are ok.

Why do you say that it is pretty common? The eprom writer does the work? I have ordered about 8 chips over the last year and they all worked.
HAving said that it is possible, but there can be another explaination too.
As I mentioned in your original thread there "can" be software compatibility issues since you are swapping in different top boards.
I have seen two chips from same catalog engines not work with each other though they both worked fine in their respective engines. This software issue is usually confined to the earlier boards.
This chip is a 2000 version, so you need to make sure it is set for 4 meg and the processor on the top board needs to be the better processor. What year is the top board you are using? G

Because of the four chips I ordered this year three of them were no good. After an email to Jeff he sent me ones that did work. I would say that is pretty common. Only one that did work was a starter set 4-6-0. Two subways and a Class A failed the first time

both top boards are the same and both sound chips say 1996 on them.so that means they should be compatable...
Bluelinec4 Well I stand corrected, that is a bad batting average for you.
Josey, How do you know the top boards are the same, are the date codes the same year?
Since Blue had issues ask MTH for a replacement. G

yes.. even the sound chips are date coded the same..Id only seen 2 different top boards that MTH put in there trains...and they should work with each other..
Josey, Well those top boards don't always work together because of the firm/software loaded into them. There was the C4 version then C5. While they look similiar they are different. Then the C5 had 2 different processors. You usually can find a 4 number date code on the top board. Like 9724 or 9956 as examples.
I would put the chip in and raise voltage to about 16V and let it sit for about 10 secs to see if the engine starts up and gives 2 dings. If not lower voltage to about 8-9 volts and see if it does after 10 secs. If not turn throttle off and back on immediately to about 8-9V and see if it starts. If not, ask MTH for the new chip and hopefully that is all it is. G
