In the 70's I was buying used Lionel right and left. Electric trains were not really all that collectable then. Every so often I would buy an American Flyer set that I knew I could sell at a profit to buy more Lionel. I got a call from a guy with an AF Santa Fe set of Alco Diesels. They were clean and in good condition so I bought the set. When I got home and looked closer at the diesels I could see the outline of the Rocket paint job under the chrome paint for the Santa Fe. There was no doubt it was a factory Santa Fe paint job. The only thing I could figure out was the Rocket version was not selling well and AF decided to repaint them into a road name that was a good seller. Wish I had kept them. Anyone else come across anything like this? Don
