recommendation to go then or pick a different weekend? unique features not offered on other weekends? too crowded or tolerable?

I believe I have been to at least 10 Railfests at Steamtown and have always enjoyed myself. Crowds are not that bad if you get there early so you can park in their lot. Last year was outstanding with 765 visiting. NS and CP usually have something special there. Last year the SD60E 911 engine made its first appearance.
This year they will have their 0-6-0 Baldwin Steam engine running. Have not heard of any other visiting steam engines but you can never tell. I only live about an hour and a quarter away so I do not have a long drive. It is a two day event but Saturday is the day to go.

NKP 765 will not be at Steamtown this year.
The Delaware Lackawanna is replacing the worn-out bridge at MP 113. There is a temporary shoo-fly being built around this bridge. 765 cannot negotiate the shoo-fly and they are not sure of having the new bridge done in time for this event. That's why 765 won't be there this year.
Next year? Maybe.
Always had a nice weekend in the past years I've went. The Delaware Lackawanna, Reading and Northern, and the North Shore Railroad have all had equipment on display in past years, as well as Amtrak. There's also the La Festa Italiana in downtown Scranton the same weekend. Lots of good food.
