I have a dozen of these, I'd like to convert to kadees, can anyone tell me the best coupler for this application.

I don't have any MTH ore cars but I have been researching production changes in MTH freight cars including other hoppers.
It looks like your cars are from the 2000 Volume 3 catalog. These are early type cars with thumb tack style couplers and molded details. Other open hoppers received improved detail including wire grab irons in the mid to late 2000s shortly after the improved freight truck came out. They may have also received provision for Kadee mounting at the same time. MTH offered six car DM&IR ore cars sets in 2009. If you are interested in tracking down newer cars ask the seller in the cars have Kadee mounting pads or shims.
