This came to me in a collection of old trains. I have no idea what it is and thought I might check with you folks. It appears to be cast aluminum, is approx. 4" long and the "111" appears to be original. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Don't think it's model railroad related. Looks like a step stool except too small. Judging from the tabs on top I'd guess it was designed to stack, some kind of storage shelf?
