Yep, I did.
Nope, way, way overdone on the graffiti. I have never seen a loco in use in that bad of condition.

Agreed. I have a couple cars for conversation pieces, but that's about it. Although I am sure some rivet counters consider some of the 3 rail car graphics graffiti.

In my perfect O-gauge world, there's no such thing as graffiti.

Photos of Union Pacific Genset's in the Los Angeles covered in this amount of graffiti are all over the internet. Lionel's version is not overdone; it's very realistic and prototypical.

No!
Not on my road.

Exactly. In fact the Lionel is a bit tame compared to a bunch of the real ones I've seen as well. I mentioned this in the other thread about this:
When I am doing my outdoor, urban photography my camera captures what I see. Before coming to Texas, I used to railfan now and then at the UP Intermodal yard in Tucson. There was a great spot on a bridge over the yard to capture pictures. No matter which track area I aimed my lens, it would always pick up some vandalized locos or cars.
Does this mean I condone or encourage graffiti? Of course not. Again, I capture what I see.
The same holds true with my trains. It's why my subway section, loosely modeled on 1970's New York, has several subway cars with the kind of graffiti that was prevalent.
Anyway, while anecdotal, my friend who owns an LHS tells me in all scales that items with graffiti are great sellers thru the years.
Not my cup of tea but I can see folks liking the realism.
Im on the fence.... the fence UP probably should build in Commerce if they wanted these to stay clean.
Here's my deal:
1. I need to get the BNSF one so I have a pair of BNSF gensets (already have the diecast one).
2. Would have to buy both UPs. Look at all the photos, a single genset is extremely uncommon. They ran in pairs (probably to drag a dead one back home). So now Id have to buy 3. I dont know if I want to lay the $1500 out.
3. There's only 1 with graffiti. I know theres decals out there, but you'd have to mess up the clean one too. Probably ok, as with the graffiti, you also probably should give them a coat of dust. If someone would announce a special run of another graffiti number, I'd be more interested.
4. With dirty locomotives, need dirty cars. I havent been collecting all the graffiti cars along the way, so they would look odd... but weathering cars is not that big of a hurdle.
5. Accuracy concerns... Dave did say they'd put the headlight in the right spot, but saying it and delivering it seem to not always agree. The catalog isnt correct per the statement. Its a $1000 gamble that they fix it. Given the present track record.... eh.
Its admittedly cool, I just havent decided how cool it is yet.
I'm going to go in for it. I do wish they had two numbers with graffiti.
After Dave mentioned correcting the lights, I am interested in both UP version. Wish there were more numbers for both versions.
For those who say No you must have some tough yard bulls walking the rails!!!!
I'd be more inclined to take the plunge if the catalog also included a few graffiti freight cars. It might make for an interesting Christmas layout train.
Are there many options for freight cars with graffiti currently available?
Not for me. It’s not that I don’t care for it I simply like steam and early diesel.
Not prototypical for my layout, but it’s a neat concept. I feel like they went a little overboard on the graffiti though.
I'm on the fence as well. Unfortunately, graffiti is a part of real life. I will probably wait to see one in person before deciding whether or not to pull the trigger.
Lionel made a bunch of graffiti laden 66' mill gondolas as shown on page 46 of the 2017 Signature Vol. 2 catalogue.
I have a "tagged" Milwaukee Road hopper and I like the touch of realism that it adds. Even though it's realistic (thanks for the pic!), I just don't like look with that heavy amount, it literally hurts my eyes to focus on everything that's going on!
As for model trains I have the choice to not buy these items, so that's OK.
As for realism, there should be more weathered items available. This is a more accurate representation of actual trains in service.
Also, people get upset over incorrect details of a paint job - why not just slosh some paint over the offending errors?
Chris,
Although I am not a fan of graffiti I do find the Lionel Genset UP Graffiti engine attractive and worth consideration of purchasing. Two issues 1) UP is not a RR I model (PRR guy) and I have no graffiti cars to pull as my era is Steam/Early Diesel.

Looking at the pictures in the dream catalog, it looks to say Legacy at the bottom in front of the fuel tank, that’s so cool. Some say No, and some say No emphatically, me, I’m a player, I say Yes, Yes Yes Yes..... I think it will blend right in my , Leapin Larry’s Looney Lines RR.....This seems to be a great catalog with lots of beautiful trains. Happy Railroading
To be clear, I have no problem with tagged items being cataloged and some choosing to buy them.
Along the weathering line, besides just dirt and faded paint, how about cars with physical damage from use like dented gondola sides?
How about some cars with noticeable repaint areas over previous graffiti, perhaps overlaid with second generation graffiti.
Keep the discussion about whether you are going to order or not. Keep the legal, criminal comments to yourself....
While not planning to order the graffiti Genset, I am seriously now thinking about ordering the "normal" nice and clean UP Genset. Of course, since I made a promise to myself (actually my idea, believe it or not) that if I but something new I will sell something old, I am thinking about selling my Lionel 6-18269 SD90 MAC (TMCC) . Not sure when the new Gensets will ship, so I guess I have plenty of time to sell the SD90 MAC. I do think the graffiti paint scheme is very cool!
I understand this is an old thread so apologize for that. I heard that Lionel cancelled this diesel however one dealer was selling custom painted switchers that looked similar. Is anyone familiar with this and if there are any on the market. Would like to add a similarly painted switcher to my collection.
Would like to find someone that can do similar art to a UP switcher.
I also heard that UP requested that Lionel not release the graffiti switcher.
I don't have any but I think they are very neat and very prototypical I have realized over the years.
My wife and I were in downtown Asheboro NC today eating lunch and there were numerous hoppers that were covered with graffiti. They actually looked pretty neat and we're not an eyesore. Whoever the vandal was was a very talented one.
I would love to get some rolling stock like the ones I saw today.
