Since it appears you both "just" got them, I wonder if there was a bad batch now hitting the shelves.
If you can't go the warranty route or you want to attempt a DIY repair, I think it would involve poking around at the component-level requiring at minimum a meter with any repair likely requiring some soldering. If replacement components were needed, cost would be minimal (less than $1) with shipping much more.
