Are they the same as the Gearbox Collectable models?

The Gearbox modes are close to 1:48, although I haven't actually measured the plane.

Regarding the Gearbox models, they are pretty nice models. The coin slot is actually hidden, so there isn't a giant slit to see if you want to model with them.  I have a 1938 Coast Guard Grumman Goose that I was going to use on my layout, but I have since decided to replace the bay scene with a racing one.  I had mine for sale here, but since there wasn't any interest, I moved it to ebay yesterday.

The Ertl die-cast airplanes are all over the map for size and scale. They are a good example of "box scale," i.e. models scaled to fit a uniform box size. The only way you are going to determine the approximate scale is to measure the wingspan and then look up the specs for the prototype. I have a bunch of Ertl planes on shelves in my bedroom and the Stearman, the Staggerwing, and the DC-3 are all about the same wingspan. Not all the same scale, I think.

Yeah, that'd be like having models of a NKP berk, a UP Big Boy and a light USRA mike, each the exact same length, and have someone thinking they could be the same scale.

If you're looking for affordable pre-built aircraft, the New Ray line seems to be pretty well scaled to whatever they claim to be though their 1/48 line does lean toward helicopters.

They make a nice cheap, but pretty well detailed Air Tractor AT502B cropduster in 1/60.  It's a smidge small, but the compressed size should fit well on a layout.  Often times you can get a farm set with it and other items for cheaper than buying it alone.

They also have a 1/42 scale Cessna 172 in floatplane and standard wheeled configuration.
