yesterday we were sitting in Berea train watching, made me think that some engineers, conductors may be on a train for several hours at a time, so, are there porti potties on board?

Yes the NS has air assisted vacuum and manual pump toilets on most of their locos. Some switcher units do not have facilities .
All of the foreign road units I've been on have seemed to be the same.
Thanks guys. I figure any engine made for a long haul would need something on board.
Collin,
I'm curious as to you thoughts on the vacuum toilets?
I found that though they may not have that chemical smell, they were more times than not a pain in the butt. I don't know how many times on outbound run-throughs we would get a little out of town and after the first or second flush the thing would quit working due to being full (too late to do anything now) or they not be working at all, in which case, there was a long delay, an hour or so until a dump truck could be dispatched, waiting to get out of town.
On inbound trains there was a good chance you would have to cut the unit off and take it to the house with the outbound crew having to get another lead unit.
Depending on if you were sitting still and which way the wind was blowing, the vented gasses were pretty nasty too!
If the chemical smell wasn't bad, I preferred the chemical toilet units.
Hold your nose for these examples-
