This is Fiona outside the train room after a hard day of chasing birds. When we have the other 2 girls over IE her mom and her cousin it gets pretty busy with pups in the train room. Not to mention, they always come find me when im doing under layout work and they get a captive audience for the head message. But id give up the trains before I give up the dogs

And yes, im messy sometimes when im working

My cats have always been allowed into the train room.

The only 'problem' is that I have had to learn to remember to sound the horn when a train enters an out of sight area. This is to reduce the risk of the train coming to an abrupt halt as it encounters the big furry mountain that was sleeping on the rails.

Always.........Two chihuahua's, two rag doll cats. And yes, a child from time to time.

My dogs were always allowed and sometimes they even got interested and wanted a better view which I gave them a boost up.  Just like humans, when their curiosity was satisfied, they would just keep me company or take a nap nearby.

Sadly, both have passed on, but when we are ready again to adopt, the family dog will not be restricted from the trains.

When we had cats, 2 of them, they had free run of the train room.  Yeah, sometimes their presence was somewhat disrupting, but that's what they do....they're cats!

They were from the same litter, and when they were about 3, the male discovered how to open closed doors by using the handle.  We had to change all the handles to knobs for the rooms we didn't want them in for their own safety, until he figured out it took both front paws to turn knobs.  Then we just gave up.

My two cats are allowed. One just likes being in the room and the other sometimes likes to get up on the layout, he totally ignores any horns, whistles and chuffs.

Their great to have around except when I have to wire up something, they both like wire to play with but I have learned that by giving them a small piece of it keeps them occupied.

I used to have a larger layout in our rear enclosed porch. This room also doubled as the "cat room" because our son is allergic to cats (even though he's in his own house now - can't come visit if there's any hint of cat...).

Even though "Chief" is a domestic shorthair, I was amazed at the amount of hair that would be attracted to everything. The layout scenery more so than the trains. Plus, since the room is more of an enclosed porch, it was much dustier, and more susceptible to humidity (rusted trains).

Since now our OTHER son has moved out on his own, I commandeered his old room for the train room. New layout, but smaller.  Amazing how little dust now accumulates.

Two dogs have complete run of the train room, but they cannot reach the table top, so no issue.

Dogs, yes, always.  With respect to our cats, we used to do so, but one of our cats mistakes ballast for litter, and the result is a mess.  So generally, to the extent you can control where cats go, we try to keep them out of the train room.  We've also taken precautions in terms of the new layout, in terms of not using grey ballast that has the texture of kitty litter.

The other thing is that the new layout is relatively crowded, and between the racket of two trains, horns, vibration, etc., they do not have much desire to enter the playroom or go up on the layout.

Matt:  The dogs are the hunters, not their master.  We live in the woods, and they always are bringing me small animals, birds caught in mid flight and various toads.  They love toads, licking them for the LSD or whatever stuff they emit through their skin.  The dogs are always foaming after doing this.  They love it.  Scary looking, but apparently it has no evil after effects, except the dogs seem a bit goofy for awhile.
