Wanted to post this to see if anyone else has experienced this and if so path forward to resolve.

I created a double reverse loop and used a Atlas 22.5 crossover.   I just ran a train through it today and noticed sparking as the trucks are making contact with the middle section (X section).   With that said the engine did not cause any sparking and not all cars did either or consistently.   Some is due to mfg width of the flange on the truck as far as I can tell

So my initial thought was to grind back the ends of the middle X which is powered to provide power across the crossover but grind them back just enough to eliminate the sparking and or potential transformer trip.   I mention this as I slowly pushed the cars through when the wheel is in contact with the X part sparking occurs.  Does not occur eslewhere.

I have attached a video and couple pics.

In the video the caboose (Lionel) and couple of the cars also Lionel do not ever or not consistently spark.   The remainder of the consist is MTH, Atlas and couple cars I picked up at a swap meet but not sure mfg (RMT?).  

Again the pic of the middle of the Crossover I thought to grind back the ends slightly to prevent the wheel sparking/contact and this should not impair the running of either the powered engine/cars or causing derailing.

Agree.  You need to increase the gap or insulate between the powered center X and the opposing running rails.

You can cover the ends of the X with some tape and confirm that it stops the arcing, but long term, the solution is going to be to file back the ends of the X to increase the gap so that cars with sloppy wheelsets can roll through there without shorting out in the gap.

Thanks for the replies.   Will start with small pieces of electrical tape on the ends then determine how much to grind back.    Will reply back with results

Had a buddy whom has a gauge for checking wheel sets.  Need to get one of those as in this pacemaker consist of various mfgs there is a difference

To close this out I put tape onto the corners of the X in the middle of the 22.5 crossover to start. That did eliminate the sparking.

Also, Atlas reached out to me and recommended grinding back the tips of the X by 30 degrees and also not to forget to vacuum up the metal shavings.   I used a Dremel and ground back the tips of the X.   No further issues and tested a few different trains through the crossover and no sparking

Just FYI if anyone else searches this up or will be installing this type of crossover.

Kudos to Atlas for taking the time to reach out to me.   Quite the customer service.
