CAn't find anything in the search about this unit so I am posting. I was left with little this afternoon after the market closed leaving me with a little less than yesterday. That doesn't happen much in this extended  Bull market. But i switched over to the Atlas site and saw the new catalog for the fall. All but one item is a rehash of what has been done before however I must be nuts to think about puting another grand into the hobby over the next 6 months and hope I come to my senses.

I have been buying the train of CZ cars for CB&Q and really can't afford to buy brass E-6s as Atlas isn't doing any so I am looking at the F-3s for a substitute power for the passenger cars. Any rivet counters out there give me an arguement or at any time did the CB&Q ever use the F-3  for a power unit on these trains. I wish that Atlas would produce an unpowered B and save me about$200. For those that have bought the F units in the previous issues are  you really happy with the fit and finish or is there something lacking. Looking closely I see the paint job around the edge of the windows dosen't reflect a glass's rubber  seal like one finds on the MTH models. Anyone have an uppowered unit, do they have electronics for lights?

• Steam generator detail on either the A or B unit as appropriate by railroad

• Highly detailed body with railroad-specific details

• Available in “A” and “B” unit versions, except for Great Northern

• All metal grab irons

• Die-cast metal chassis, fuel tank and trucks

• Twin flywheel-equipped motors

• Directional golden-white LED lighting

• Accurate painting and lettering

• Close-coupling between units

• Weight: 5 lbs/unit; Length: Approx. 12.5”/unit

• Minimum diameter curve: O-36 (3-Rail) (A-unit)

• Minimum diameter curve: O-45 (3-Rail) (A & B-unit)

• Minimum radius curve: 36” (2-Rail)

There is no separation of stuff that is eliminated for the unpowered units.

If I use the F3s can I get by with just an A&B or better to have ABA?

Thanks

Phill

Well if you want a bigger unit, Golden Gate Depot, the plastic arm of Sunset 3rd Rail did the E7s in CB&Q.   they did both As and Bs, all powered.

They are very nice.   I have a set of 2 PRR A units.   Lots of sound and single motor drives that I really like.   all wheels powered.    And they don't have smoke, which I am glad about too.

The CB&Q ordered those "special" A-B-A sets for the planned operation of the CZ, assuming that the motive power would be running through from chicago all the way to Oakland. However, both the D&RGW and WP wanted their own motove power on their respective sections of the CZ route, thus the CB&Q A-B-A F units where cutoff in Denver.

The Burlington quickly decided to use their "standard" E unit passenger motive power, E5A and E5B, and E7A units, and quickly ordered additional E7A units from EMD. The end result was, depending on the time era you are modeling, those A-B-A F3 units COULD be correct for VERY EARLY operation of the CZ. Otherwise, you might want to look at the Sunset/3rd Rail/Golden Gate Depot E7A units (the Burlington did not own any E7B, nor E8B, nor E9B units).

They also eventually had their steam generators removed, were regeared and painted in the "grayback" freight scheme, although they did retain their passenger 9960ABC, 9961ABC numbers.

Just looking for some clarification:Were the units on the above link ever released, or at those still pending?

I realize this is Atlas and there have been plenty discussions about their release schedule, but according to their website these were announced in '12, and are showing an estimated September '13 shipping date.

Just wondering if I should be on the lookout at retailers for them now, remain patient and wait, or is Lionel's version competitive/worth committing to instead?

Depends on what year you are modeling. Eventually ALL the Burlington E8 and E9, as well as many E7, units where rebuilt at the West Burlington Shops with stainless side panels.
