Atlas F-unit shenanigans

So I was taking a look at my F-units this evening and decided to look on the Atlas site when I noticed something strange.  

 

I have two of the Silver Burlington F3A's, both 3640-1, both engine #9960A.  One is powered, one is not.  When I look at the atlas site, it shows that item number 3640-1 (road number 9960A) was not offered in unpowered.  But sure enough, this one of them is unpowered (and I paid the unpowered price). Both factory labels.

 

I have two of the greyback Burlington F2/3A's, both powered.  Atlas item numbers 3603-1(road number 150) and 3603-X(road number 151).  Once again, on the Atlas site, 3603-1 exists as a powered A unit, but there is no 3603-X and it shows road number 151 as being unpowered A unit.  These are both powered and the label with the X is a factory label.  

 

Lastly, there is Lackawanna F2/3B unpowered(soon to be a burlington greyback).  Atlas item number 3609-2(road number 606B).  On the Atlas website, it shows it as being the powered B, but once again, this one is unpowered and the unpowered price was paid.  Also, there is an "unpowered" label on the unpowered unit box.

 

None of these engines showed any signs of tampering and are in perfect condition.  But I did notice that the unpowered units had gears on the wheels/trucks and also had QSI labels on the boxes.  Is this normal for atlas unpowered?  Is the labeling silliness common and I just don't know?  Are the visitors coming?  In the long run it doesn't really matter much I suppose, I'm elated to even have them, but my curiosity is up with all this.

As far as the "extra" gears and such, I am guessing it is a matter of economics (as in cheaper) to only produce one part rather than two (one with gears, one without). The gears (though unnecessary) on the dummy do not hinder it's function.

 

As for part numbers, I would contact Atlas and ask them to explain.

I can confirm that.  Originally I purchased AtlasO FM Erie-built dummies as I wanted to repower the units with a single motor horizontal drive.  With too many other projects ahead of modifying the AtlasO chassis for horizontal drive I simply ordered 4 motors from Atlas, wired them in series, and installed QSI DCC decoders.  The motors  were a drop-in fit and saved me quite a bit over purchasing new powered units.  Apparently others did likewise and now AtlasO only sells the motors to replace defective ones.  I recall reading on the OGR forum that several have purchased Mabuchi motors from other companies (MTH or Williams??) that will fit in AtlasO China drive diesels.
