Today I went to change the direction of one of my Atlas remote turnouts and found that the "plunger thing" that feeds into the solenoid doesn't move more than 1/2 inch - thus I can't change direction of the track with my remote or by hand.
Any suggestions for a fix?

take it apart and clean the plunger. could be dust or a bug in where the plunger slides.
I've had this happen. Most likely the coil overheated. You might want to check to see if your switch controller button has stuck, causing the coil to stay activated continously...which they are not designed to do. This is what happened to me. As to the fix....if this is the case, the coil has somewhat collapsed from the heat, and replacement of the coil assembly is the solution. I think the coil assembly cost about $12.00 and is not a difficult job to do. (Replace the switch controller though if the button sticks, before changing the coil so it doesn't happen again). Hope this helps.

If the coil has overheated, you'll see it as soon as you remove the top half of the switch machine. It doesn't take much to slag the plastic. Hopefully, it's just dirty---
