Greetings All,
Finally finished (well almost) my Atlas Switch Tower. I refer to this as version 2.0 since I had initially left the second story in its unpainted original yellow with the intention just to weather it a bit. Big mistake. I had to repaint it after spending several hours masking everything up. Wow that was a job and a half. Now some of the particulars about this build.
Paint:
Red flat primer spray paint on bricks with a wash of light gray for mortar
Tamiya Japanese Dark Green Acrylic on the second story
Model Flex Dark Gray on Doors and Windows
Polly S Roof Brown on stairs, 2nd story floor, storage bin, barrels and roof supports
Polly S Grimy Black on chimeny cap and switch levers.
Silver Craft Paint on gutters, down spouts, switch lever handles, and oil tank.
Polly S Rust and Earth for weathering on the spots that needed it.
I did not use the included plastic sheet for the windows since they are at best a poor representation of windows. Instead I used Plastruc clear acrylic with paper shades placed behind the windows. Overall it looks much better. The pallets and lumber pile were scratch built from Midwest Basswood. I also heavily weathered the roof with a bit of dry bushing dark gray and a black wash. Did some light weathering on the bricks and siding and gave the entire model a good spray of dull coat. The scenery is is mixture of course ballast, green and earth flock, and a bit of light green flock.
I still have to put in the lights however it is pre wired and the roof has not been glued down so it should be an easy fix. Also in the posted pics I noted that I missed a bit of brown paint on the backs of the second floor supports. My one noted mess up is that I used a bit of too much glue putting in the windows on the first floor. I noticed it was a bit exagerated in the photos. In normal light it looks like the windows are cracked a bit. Maybe I will fix it and maybe I wont.
Thanks for watching and good night
Ed
PS Im crossing off one of my items off my bucket list. Im going cross country by train. All the way from Metropark, NJ to Emeryville, CA. I leave tomorrow, head to DC to catch the Congressional Limited and then switch to the Californina Zephyr in Chicago. It should be an adventure. I will post some photos in the Real Trains section. Look for it.
