I recently acquired an Atlas USRA 0-6-0 switcher with TAS command equipment. It looks and runs great but the sound quality, particularly that of the whistle, is really poor quality (tinny and a little garbled). I took a look in the tender and the speaker is very small and flat (about the size and height of a thick 50 cent piece). Has anyone had success at replacing the speaker in one of these engines?

The K-Line Tank engines are the same way. I wish to change those out also. But, I have yet to find a speaker that will fit. Maybe a call to QSI can remedy the problem. I just haven't done that yet.
You could also try a normal 2" speaker in a trailing car, but then that car would always have to be the first car in your consist and the sound would come from behind the engine instead of from. If you find anything out let us know. BF
Odd. My Atlas 0-6-0 sounds great. You might try and get an Atlas factory replacement speaker.
Is there room to put a baffle under it or does it already have one? I put a cardboard tube (thicker than a toilet paper roll tube) under the speaker that came with the MRC AC Sounder and it seemed to make some difference.
Because of large volume control mounted in the tender, their is only about a 1/2 inch of head room above the speaker. At first I tried to cover the speaker using a prescription medicine bottle cap. This seemed to provide some improvement but not much. I may give your suggestion a try next.
I would contact Atlas O for suggestions.
