I have managed to obtain a gear to replace one that was worn out. It is not a press fit so can anyone suggest how it might be attached without specialist tools. The engine runs fine but this gear will not stay in place so cannot drive wheels

The correct way to do this job is to pull wheels to get at the retaining pin. With the wheels out of the way, you can remove the armature, and gain access to the pin. The pin needs to be staked in place. So having all the above components out of the way, safeguards against unwanted damage.
