Pete, Do you have a link to the guy with the On3 operating couplers. Would like to check that out.
I have a few Atlas engines that I use their scale electro couplers. They work but not very well. Just modified the coupler box and coupler shank to shorten how far they stick out.
Then there's my DIY electric Kadee's. A rather simple mod that doesn't cost anything but some work.
Finally got one of my electric Kadees to work in a Lionel I-12 caboose using a ERR Mini Commander EX board to fire the coupler. Need to take pictures of that.

This is the key. There are many ways to pull that brass rod.
This caboose coupler works off a battery powered R/C toy car guts.
