MTH 30-2349-1, 3v PS2 C&NW, never out of box, from a 2003 catalog, started right up upon application of power. No hesitation. F - N - R engaged immediately. Thought for sure battery would be discharged. Very surprised.

I would still charge/change the battery at it's age .
I would REPLACE that battery due to its age! It's 18 years old!
Leaving it in there is just asking for trouble.
Get a BCR immediately!
I would charge the engine with the Railing charger that MTh sells they are really good and don't over charge the battery ! you can put engine on the track and let it sit to charge , but i believe the board hours will increase while powered up if i remember correctly ! when you ran the engine and cut power did the sounds continue for around 7 seconds if not the battery need replaced !

Thank you all for your replies. Have already asked a fellow forum about an extra BCR, but it’s for a 5v. Didn’t use a stopwatch, but shutdown sounds lasted to a count of 8 One Thousand. Rich, shot you an email. Could you read it and reply?
Sean - where do I buy a BCR?
Alan - since I’m thinking , as Rich pointed out, this is an elderly, venerated, battery, a BCR would be my better investment, as I have no idea how many engines are in my future.
thank you both
