I am new to DCC so bear with me.  I just acquired my first On30 engine, a new sealed in the box Bachmann SR&RL 2-4-4 Forney.  I don't have DCC yet so can only run it in DC mode.  It runs okay forward but growls a bit in reverse - it may just need lubrication.  My question relates to the headlight.  It doesn't come on.  Does the headlight only work in DCC or should it come on with DC applied (I assume this is what's referred to as "analog").  As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Not completely sure, but I think to control the headlight and various other functions while operating with traditional DC requires a sound controller box.  These are available from several manufacturers.  My advice would be to buy a DCC control system and go that route...  the Digitrax Zepher or if you want walk-around control, the Prodigy Wireless (I use the Prodigy Wireless and I'm quite happy with it).

One other thing to consider. In DCC mode the track voltage is much higher than DC mode. I am not sure how Bachmann has the 2-4-4 set up....but it may look like it is not working in DC mode but in fact be very very dim. Hold the loco on the track so the drivers can spin and turn the voltage up and see if you see a headlight at high voltage.
