Bachmann 4-6-0 stuck in forward....

I liked my Bachmann 4-6-0 loco so much that I bought another one for a special project. Before I took it apart to modify I checked it out on the test layout. It runs fine, bell and whistle work. BUT it will not cycle through the DCU......forward only. Took the tender shell off....all connections good and tight....but no neutral or reverse. Before I return it and it cost me more money....is it just a bad DCU or something else I can check. I know Bachman will fix it but I really wanted to start this project now and not in 2 months. Thanks
