I recently met with Bud Reece here in Las Vegas at the Western Toy & Hobby Show and we got to chat about Bachmann's future plans. Bachmann plans to use more of the Kader factories for production instead of the recently aquired Sanda Kan factory which now is used by Hornby to manafacture at. In fact Hornby is the biggest customer there. Bachmann also announced two new HO DCC sets with sound that shatter a price point and are expected to be huge sellers! I wont get into N , or G scale other than the brass track Line in G will expand. In Williams expect some big changes to their line. They have complete use of the former K-Line tooling and we will see a number of new announcments at York. They will be entering the big scale market and picking up the slack from others who have not moved forward with their plans. (You can read between the lines here).

Now another tidbit about another major O gauge train manfacture just came across my desk. Expect a major announment at York.

Some real nice models they have the rights to tooling include the scale SD75M, F3, E8/9, GP38, the intermodal series of stack cars, containers, and spine cars.  Hmmmm...

I can almost bet they will not stop the traditional series- that is a huge market in itself...

They can have both parts to the puzzle and really make some nice things for everyone.

Charlie, thanks so much for the info.  I am a Williams fan (except for the sturdy stamped metal handrails).

I am not sure how to read between the lines, I would hope that they produce more of the good quality low end like the new GP-30, but it seems that some think there will be pushing up toward the high end.  I am not understanding why that would make sense.

I just checked the WBB web site, the GP30 is not described as scale, but it seems close to scale.  Anyone know if the GP30s are selling well?

Great news about the use of K-Line tooling!!!! Maybe all the guys on here who want the 15" passenger cars will see their dreams come true! I'm with Jeff above in hoping the well cars and containers make a comeback. That would be a huge seller!

Can't wait to hear the reports from York.

Charlie, Thanks for passing along some cool hints and giving us a little something to noodle before York!!

Stare at the counter weights!  Front and rear axle counterweights are thinner than on the original 700e thus matching the K Line, the center axle has a curved counterweight also identical to K Line.

Really not an earth shattering discovery, just an observation.

Is there any way to define "complete use", and how that will impact Aristo/RMT?

I doubt it will have any impact at all on RMT.  As I recall, the K-Line tooling was divided-up when Lionel got out of the K-Line by Lionel business, and Bachmann has what it has and RMT has what it has.

Previous Lionel 700e.

VL  Hudson

K Line Hudson.

Interesting observation..   Would probably not have caught that without it being pointed out!  Perhaps you are correct about them having the rest of the K-Line Hudson tooling too.  I've always thought that a Legacy K-Line Hudson would be the one to beat - let's wait and see.

By the way,  that's a NICE photo of the K-Line model. Seems familiar somehow...

I believe the big scale K-Line steamers were not made by Sanda Kan, but Korea Brass.  Kader probably does not own that tooling.

K-Line plastic was from China and K-Line diecast was from Korea, I believe Korea Brass.  Lionel has access to the die-cast from Korea Brass.  Kader / Sanda Kan / Bachmann has most of the plastic.  RMT has the old Marx molds and some of the K-Line plastic molds.  Atlas had an agreement to use some of the plastic molds but dropped them because it would be too much work to bring them up to Atlas standards. That's what I remember.

What I am looking for Bachmann to make in the Williams O Scale line are the Evans Products Covered Steel Coil gondola type cars.

Many roadnames and graphic variations left to make. Examples

Baltimore & Ohio Capitol Dome

Penn Central

Grand Trunk Western

Elgin, Joliet & Eastern

Detroit & Toledo Shore Line

Missouri Pacific

Norfolk and Western NW

Chessie System B&O with navy blue covers

Chicago and North Western in more color and graphic variations based on images from the Chicago & North Western historical society book of the "Final Freight Car Roster".

CN had similar coil cars

Southern Railway had similar coil cars

A few things come to mind

If they can make DCC for HO,they can also make it for O with good sound.

If they make the scale steamers, what will they use for electronics, smoke units, etc?

How about the 18 inch 21 inch passenger car lines?,K-lines were better than others

IMO

K-line was my favorite company, with the K-Line tooling resources of Bachmann they could become serious competitors in O.

Well it should be interesting. While I hope WbB does not alter their product line drastically.....adding 'new' items is fine....but don't dump all the older Williams stuff. Williams Bi-level Amtrak cars seem to hold their value at better than average rate. But even if they dump all the older Williams stuff there is always the secondary market. I NEED nothing but still bought a MTH Premier F-3 ABA set,  Atlas SD-40 high hood, MTH full dome MILW car and a C&O caboose at a train show today near Ashland KY and there was TONS of other deals.....more if you run conventional like me. So if all the manufactures leave me behind there will still be tons of trains to buy at shows.

WbB....I went to the show looking for modern 'coal porter' type hoppers and Husky Stack inter-modal cars.  There were NONE for sale at any price and ebay prices are high to very high....so it seems there is a market void.....

Hudson Drivers!

The drivers - specifically the main (center driver) - on the Holy 700E was WRONG!

The real counterweight on the 5344 (the specific, actual locomotive modeled) looked like K-line's.

These locos are models of real machines, and the VL Hudson's main driver looks correct,

regardless of K-line or anything else, or where the part may or may not have come from.

I still like the appearance of K-line's J1 better than anyone else's. (Whisper about

U-shaped...)

I am privileged to work in another hobby field in product development. I know what;s coming for the next few years.....but I better not tell about what's in development if I want to keep my position! It's a matter of trust and keeping a competitive edge over your competitors! I'll look forward to what comes out of the

big show'/York like most others!

Same in transportation.   I know about some stuff coming up with a transportation concern, and I know about it because of my interest and I KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT!

My guess is thesecond  manufacturer would be MTH.  They are the only two which actually MAKE there own trains overseas.  Others use others factory space.

Weaver makes most of there stuff here.  Lionel, some boxcars, and are these actually made by Lionel itself.
