What kind of access does NS have in Baltimore?  Looks like they have some trackage near Penn Station but all I see is a light rail commuter line.  Do they have any mainlines through there with heavy freight?

Any major abanodonments of any rr's into Baltimore over the years?

Hi Mike - NS uses Amtrak trackage on the NE Corridor between Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC.  NS may even use Amtrak NE Corridor north of Philly as well.  Occassionally I have seen NS trains use CSX trackage between Baltimore and DC.... this line is known to rail commuters at the Camden Line.  Some MARC trains also use this line.  MARC also runs trains from Penn Station Balto to Washington DC on the AMTRAK NE Corridor.

NS maintains a large yard in the Orangeville section of Baltimore, which is the former Pennsy yard.  In Baltimore area, most any trackage that was once Pennsy or later Penn Central is now NS to my knowledge.

You are correct that Baltimore Light Rail has trackage to Penn Station in Baltimore City.

Major abandonments would be ( years ago now ) the Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad line from Annapolis to Camden Station in Baltimore.  Baltimore Light Rail uses this same line now which is intact to Ferndale, Md. The rest of this line is a rails to trail from Furndale to Annapolis, Md.  As far as I know the Canton RR services freight customers along this same line ( which is shared with Baltimore Light Rail ) to Furndale right now.

I have recently seen NS high hoods servicing the automobile import docks in Dundalk, Md.  I would assume the NS also service Seagirt and Dundalk Marine Terminals as well.

After Hurricane Agnes in 1972, a good part of the Pennsy's old Northern Central RR Line between Baltimore and York/Harrisburg was abandon due to bridges being washed out.  I think Penn Central was still in existence at this time and thereby owned that line.

Of course parts of the Western Maryland RR ( which was absorbed into Chessie System later to come CSX )

The Canton RR is still in existence with their own trackage out in east Baltimore providing switching service for industries in that area.

The Maryland and Pennsylvania ( Ma and Pa ) pulled out of Baltimore back in the 1950s

I don't think the Patapsco and Back Rivers RR is still in existence either.  This RR was owned by Bethlehem Steel and serviced their Sparrows Point Plant.

That about all I know about Baltimore railroading at this time.  I'm sure others on the forum can fill in any gaps.

At any rate I hope this information helps you out. :-)

The NS uses the Port Road Branch from Enola to Perryville, MD where it enters the NEC.  From there, trains can run south to Bayview yard in Baltimore or north to either Newark, De ( Railroad DAVIS - MP PL38) where the access the Delmarva Secondary to Dover, De and points south, or Wilmington, De (Railroad REGAN - MP PL28) to access the Shellpot Seconday and Edgemoore Yard.

NS also uses the NEC from Philadelphia (ZOO) south to access Marcus Hook New Jersey and Conrails Stoney Creek Seconday.
