i have a 313 bridge - old postwar -where the motor works fine but the gearbox in the green case under the stanchion will not turn. I disconnected the cam that goes to lift the bridge and the gearbox will not turn. I removed the three screw on the top of the green gearbox (the one near the track was pretty tricky), but the top would not lift. Any ideas on how to open it? I suspect that the old grease in there is petrified.

i appreciate the help.

If you haven't already, you might want to remove the house so you do not damage it.  This will also give you a little more room to work.

Once you remove the 3 screws, you should be able to remove the top of the gear box.  I suspect that you are right about the grease.  Use a razor blade or very thin screwdriver and work it into seam.  The cover has to come up straight because it has legs that hold the bearings in place.  Be careful, under the gear assembly is a switch with fingers that ride on the eccentric shaft (it controls the up and down motor cycle).  If it is not broken - leave it in place.  Remember, parts are scarce for this bridge.

Good luck.

Thanks Danr! You were right. It took some patience, but the gearbox came open. I cleaned off the crusted grease, put in some Red-n-Tacky, oiled the bearings and everything turns fine - including the camshaft that comes out of the gearbox. Much quieter too.

I was very careful with the stack of connectors at the bottom of the gearbox.

i then attached the cam and rod that goes up the stanchion. The load stopped everything like it was binding somewhere. I Loosened the resistance spring all the way but no luck. Any ideas? I am almost there.

i appreciate your help.
