I've tried searching but if someone has info to share or a link to a previous thread on the subject I would appreciate it.

I have a 3 rail coupled passenger set partially modified with scale wheel sets to 2 rail power.

I would like to be able to add a selector (2R or Battery) switch and a battery power kit to be able to run them with 3 rail engines due to current temporary space limitations.

Any recommendations?

.....since they're already wired to DC can I just add selector switchs to a 9 volt battery plug?

Trying to understand what you have.

So when on 3R, you flip the switch for DC/battery operation.  When on 2R, you flip the switch to AC operation?  What electronics are in place to convert track voltage to DC?

Are the lights those DC LED strips that operate between ~9-12V?  How much power does each car draw?

When you say "coupled" passenger set does this mean there is electrical connection (tether) between cars for the lighting?  Or are you placing a battery system in each car?

Are the batteries meant to be re-chargeable (charging during 2R operation, then discharging during 3R operation)?
