I have a number of older MTH engines that I am in the process of replacing the battery with a BCR.  One of the units is a 4-6-4 Hudson w/electronic whistle (30-1025).  Now I know that this engine does not have ProtoSound Digital Sound, it does have ProtoSound DCRU reverse unit.  I was told that if it had the ProtoSound DCRU reverse unit, it would have the battery.  I opened up the tender and there are two boards, but no battery.  The only thing that looks like a battery is a black QSI module, but is definitely is not a battery.

(See attached photos)

Looking at the underside of the tender, you can see the smoke on/off switch.  There is no volume control for the sound (which I would not expect).

So, if the unit does not have a battery (and I assume no ProtoSound), is there any way that the unit can be scrambled (i.e. the three clangs of death)?  Would I be correct that the engine can be put on the track after years of storage and it will work properly without any chance of problem?

I discovered this year that some of the older MTH stuff, around 96-97 has QSI reverse and sound boards but no battery.  These are pre Protosounds engines. It should work fine if both the boards are still OK.  My engine had a bad reverse board and would only run in reverse, but the sounds were fine.  GGG sold me a 'new' reverse board that he had saved and that fixed it right up.  Best of luck with it.

That must be what I have... It's funny though that they put on the end flap of the box "ProtoSound DCRU reverse unit".  It's almost like they put an old version of the train in a newer version of the box which indicated ProtoSound.  As long as everything runs OK and I can't get the scrambled board/3 clangs of death stuff.

Thanks for your response!

The DCRU is not a Proto Sound Board.  It is QSI bottom reverse board that uses a basic logic circuit for changing direction just like a anyone else's reverse unit.  No battery.

DCRU are used when a whistle or horn board is used.  Usually last number is -0 to indicate this.

MTH ProtoSound bottom board is a dumb board that MUST have a ProtoSound top board to function.  The Protosounn engines have a battery.

Now QSI did use the DCRU with a Power Supply board and a ProtoSound Top board to give fully sounds and other functions.  That did use a battery, but it was a 3 board stack.  G

QSIndustries (QSI) made the first successful 3-rail "O" Gauge electronic E-unit. Sounds came later, as previous posts state. It took a few years for MTH to adapt those units for full "Protosound."

After Proto-2 systems were introduced, previous systems were called "Proto-1." That name was not printed on boxes.

A few years ago I purchased a beautiful MTH Premier model of Southern Ps-4 No. 1401 in the Smithsonian (20-3006-1). Made in 1994, it had the first "Protosound (TM) Digital Sound Package / Designed by QSI." It worked with my ZW but not with newer transformers. I had suspected that. After a few emails, MTH Parts brought a circuit board from a RailKing Ps-4 made in 1997 to the York Meet. Wayne Renga of J and W Electronics installed it as well as a BCR. She runs like a Hamilton watch, and I gained Passenger Station Announcements (PSA).
