A stunning 1899 photo of a beautiful C&NW engine is shown on today's Shorpy.com posting.

 

I check Shorpy daily. These wonderful photos taken over the past 150 years are amazing captures of people and places from our past. And if one wishes to focus on railroads, that category can be selected for viewing. Three or four new ones are posted each day.

 

I might add that I have never had any computer issues resulting from viewing this resource.

Question about Shorpy - whose photos are these, it seems some are public domain yet a certain magazine hoped to show a before and after and the rate just to publish a small pic was astronomical (and not viable).  Aren't a lot of these images public domain or available elsewhere?  I've seen (at times) similar images show up in those sepia colored before and after books - assume they were attained at no charge from a free archive of some sort.
