I have no Beeps, however, if they have another run of those BNSF Beeps I may just have to have one. That thing looks really nice, it has my attention. Of course I would then have to have some RMT rolling stock of appropriate size to go with it...I think gunrunnerjohn converted one of these to TMCC with an ERR mini commander or something, so that would be a nice project to add to the mix.

When I saw this post this morning, I began to look at photos of my layout – and realized that I didn't have as many photos as I thought! So I got busy this afternoon.

I started with an old Williams version back in the late 80s – but RMT's new design for the old Kusan engine is a winner. (I still have the body around – repainted – but the chassis is long gone.)

Here are some of my custom jobs:

Reading Beeps

A solid Reading green version to go with my yellow and green scheme.

LV Yllwjckt & Snwbrd

A Lehigh Valley Yellowjacket that usually winds up paired with the Snowbird.

CNJ Beep

From the Jersey Central's "blue" period. (This represents one of my few successful attempts at printing color decals on white decal paper.)

LHR_Beep2 Another pair of Lehigh Valley Beeps.

LV_Beeps1

Like some others, I have also used the Beep chassis as an opportunity to kit bash.

Here are my Lehigh & New England FeAps.

L&NE FeAps1

I have another pair on the workbench that will eventually be painted in Reading black.

I found a damaged K-Line shell at York one year and did this fast and easy mod.

Amtrak_FP-20

Finally, I couldn't wait for RMT's boxcars – so I made some myself. Pennsy electrics and a Jersey Central diesel.

BB3s_2

CNJ_boxcab2

All in all, these engines are more fun than I should be allowed to have.

Oh, oh, that can't be good for the wallet.

I'm having the same problem, looked earlier today. Fortunately no BNSF. More good news is they are much better on the wallet then some of the other websites with trains.

Ha, ha!  I'm not so fortunate, I see a Western Maryland BANG, my favorite road name when I was in HO, but I don't have any engines in WM only freight cars in O gauge.  Yes, the pricing is very attractive.

Lee, you and I have never talked so I was quite encouraged to see your Beep shell bash on the RMT S-4 frame as I did the same thing. I remember when working on mine, thinking this would be a great idea for Walter to do.

I also like the imitation BEEF's you guys (Lee and galley proof) made! Excellent! I hadn't thought of that idea yet!

Of all the RMT products, I strongly suspect the BEEF has been the biggest sales failure. The BEEF tries to be too many things and fails. It would have been a much much better loco if it had been originally made as more of an 027 loco along the lines of the BEEP.

The BEEF is the only RMT product I would never consider buying BUT had it been made as Lee or Galley Proof modeled it, that would be another story.

Some super creative use of the BEEP chassis and kitbashing!

I think you are correct.  Absolutely.  It was a clever idea but one that did not work, as I see it.

I bought my four when BEEFs first came out, due to good results with RMT before and out enthusiasm for BEEPS and such. All four were ATSF Warbonnet ones, and nicely done.  But I just could not figure out what to do with them: they were detailed and scale in two dimensions, but so short they really weren't models -- they looked weird with any scale stuff and strange when mixed with traditional and other toys, too: they simple did not fit.  Then I got the idea of doing them as the locos in my war train, giving them a makeover to make them really into toys, and they turned out great.

BTW - I have two of Walters GG1s and those are pretty nifty: diecast metal body and heavy and durable as the dickens.

Spence,

What road name is the purple, yellow and gray beep? It went by too fast and I couldn't make it out. They don't have BNSF beeps any more, but I really like those colors. It goes well with some MTH stuff I already have. Mike Wolf must like that road name as well?

I agree that the BEEFs are a bit awkward in size. I have two pair of A-As (I've powered both), but I wouldn't buy any more.

I do have six Marx E-8 shells in the cabinet, waiting for a rainy day. They'll be cut down to fit on the BEEP chassis. we'll see how that goes.

Tiffany, glad you like the FP-20 :-) (one half of a 40). I could have spent more time on finishing this one, but it came out so nicely that I just left it as is.

rtr12,

Sounds like you are hooked!

As an aside, I have noticed you have replied or liked a number of my posts.  I like to look at folks' profiles who seem to have similar interests to mine.  I see you live in Lenexa, Kansas.  The company I work for, Consolidated Communications, bought SureWest formerly Everest, located in Lenexa a few years ago.  They bought the company I work for in 2007.  I have a few colleagues in Lenexa.  Do you know any one who works for that company?

Hi Mark,

We both seem to like Beeps! Yes, I think I want a Beep now! People just keep posting these things like this until I can no longer resist. Unfortunately I struck out with both BNSF (my road name) and ACL (Spence's video). I emailed them asking if they would be making any more of either of those, will have to wait for a reply.

If I can coerce (well at least persuade) gunrunnerjohn into a little advice and assistance, I would like to attempt an ERR/TMCC install in the Beep. I think he installed a CC Lite or something in one a while back and it sounded like a fun project. I have never done one before.

As for SureWest, I don't know anyone that works there. Last year we moved pretty far out to the West edge Lenexa, and I don't think SureWest comes out this far, we currently have Time Warner (had them since the '70s). I think our only choices here right now are AT&T and Time Warner. Google fiber is supposed to be coming out here and I was thinking about switching to that? They are supposed to be on the way, but no idea when they will arrive? Haven't seen any work going on around here yet.

rtr12,

I think I saw that too that John had done such an install.  My command control locomotives are all MTH.  But I actually have more conventional engines than DCS.

Yes, Google has an office in Pittsburgh and I have heard rumblings of them getting into the act there.  I am too far out for Consolidated Communications and get service from a local cable company.

John,

So looking at this topic on the CC-Lite and ERR Web site, I have a basic question.  Can this be controlled with a DCS in TMCC mode, or am I off base?  I have seen the ERR products referred to many times, but have never looked into what they can do.  I see there are lots of possibilities for operating cars etc.

Thank you for the reference topic!

Mark is not guilty, it was me (or is that I) that was looking for you.   I need to save this link, they answered my email already, 2016 at the earliest for the Beeps in the road names I was wanting.

Thread and Link saved, now all I have to do is remember where I saved it when the Beep's become available.

There is one potential wrinkle: a 'Feature Code' that to the best of my knowledge, requires a Lionel remote to set. It only has to be done once, but it's a little-known 'gotcha' that I only found by closely reading the ERR installation manual. I haven't heard of any changes that let it be configured with a DCS remote operating a TMCC or Legacy base.

There is one potential wrinkle: a 'Feature Code' that to the best of my knowledge, requires a Lionel remote to set, as one lf the last steps of the install. It only has to be done once, but it's a little-discussed requirement that I only found by closely reading the ERR installation manual. I haven't heard of any changes (yet) that allow it to be configured with a DCS remote operating a TMCC or Legacy base.
