Bending brake shoe detail on Lionel

All 3 F units I purchased from Lionel and the most recent Berk have brake detail touching/shredding traction tires. After Lionel sent me thinner traction tires for 3 new locos under warranty they sent me an email that said to bend the brake detail so it doesn't rub the tire. So how do you go about doing this without breaking the metal? Generally they rub the outer third of the tire evenly. In others the top or bottom of the brake touch.

By taking a small slot screw driver and carefully and slowly wedging the screw driver tip between the wheel [traction tire] and the brakeshoe
