I’m in the market for something to bump-and-go and wondering what the favorite bump-and-goes are out there.

I’m mostly a postwar guy, so toylike doesn’t scare me. I do like and appreciate additional detail, but not a requirement. Reliability and a low price are a focus.

I’ve considered the #60 trolley and the #50 gang car. I’ve seen MTH has a similar trolley, but not sure what the consensus is on it. I also like the handcars, but not sure if they are bump and go. From what I’ve seen online is that MTH is of better quality.

I would love to hear your thoughts and see some pictures and/or videos of the bump-and-go items in action.

I have the #60 trolley, #50 gang car, #52 fire car and the #69 maintenance car. The first 3 run great and are used quite a bit but the maintenance car seems top heavy and has a tendency to derail occasionally after hitting a bumper. I use Lionel 260 bumpers only.

You're correct about the handcar not being a bump-and-go car.

Steve

I also concur about the MTH bump and go trolley.  Had one at my former place of employment every Christmas that would run around the tree 10 hours a day, Thanksgiving to New Year's, five days a week.  I calculated the little indefinite racked up about 13 actual miles of travel per day.   Over about five years of this, I went through one roller assembly and one motor.  That was it.

@stan2004 That's a good question.  For this application, I was still thinking of bumpers.  I enjoy conventional control, use of insulated rails, and relay logic of 022 switches to assist in performing a designated/random route.  Below is the track plan I have in mind, and I would like to have the trolley/other automatically visit each point/loop.  I haven't worked that part out yet, but may need some help there.

@Tom Tee @laz1957 @pdxtrains @M. Mitchell Marmel @DMASSO Great to learn of the great quality of the MTH Trolley.  The workloads shared are really impressive.  I do like the action of the hand car - good to know the MTH version is bump-n-go.

@Tinplate Art The gang car is a classic and you can find them at a great price.  I declare Wednesdays are now Bump Day

@Hobbit Thanks for that first hand knowledge, that's what I was hoping to get.

@ChooChoo1972 That's a fun way to run them too.  It might be fun to unleash two of them on the above layout and just see what happens

Set up a loop of track and put two bump and go trolleys on it. A true demonstration of the uncertainty principle.

That sounds hysterical, now scratching my head with the possibilities of this madness....

Anyhow, I have a new 120th anniversary model 60 that so far has been well behaved and runs flawlessly. The single LED compartment light is weak, I used double sided tape to make a foil roof "reflector" which helped a lot! For power, Pats trains had old lionel CW-30's on sale for $30 and works perfectly to operate my trolley line. I also highly recommend lionel's new trolley announcement track, its simple and has worked without issue for the 3 months I've had. It does a great job simulating a stop and performing 3 different sound recording in rotation.

How hard is it to remove the roof? Thinking about maybe putting the tin foil on the underside of the roof and maybe adding some passengers to the MTH 4 trolleys I have.

The six center clips support the light assembly.  The six slots near the edge receive the roof pegs.   Once you remove the trolley from the motor chassis, you should be able to gently push/nudge the roof clips to ease off the roof.   If you plan to add passengers you will need to add a floor.   Note the white square styrene strips were added to raise the floor and give clearance to the mechanism below.   Check out a post I did regarding: "What's your Covid Project" for more details. https://ogrforum.com/...s-your-covid-project

Cheers, Dave
