Hi, I've been looking at various kadees for my scale wheeled Western Maryland Decapod. Ive heard about both 805 and 806 kadee couplers, but don't know which one would be good for this engine and look the most prototypical. Thanks!

I believe the look of both from the outside is the same?
The 806 being short boxed, acts different if I remember correctly? That's important when close coupling diesels with bigger porch overhangs.
The coupler pushes in, instead of pulling out like the 805. So when ever I can, I use the 805. I love watching the slack action (runout) when starting a train.

I don't have this engine of yours though, to discuss properly.
Ill probably go with the 805 then. I just don't want something that's too short, and will end up having the tender too close to whatever its coupled to.
I may have used the wrong links thinking of the numbers you posted. I use the modern 745 versions.

short ones

Do you use the short or long ones on steam?
745. It is what I would call regular length.
There is also a long version that I put on the Atlas 86'? flat cars. (746?)
805 of 740 is the standard length. Best for 99% of applications. 746 is the long shank
Question...What would you use the extended coupler boxes for ?

At first, I thought it would be for very long cars. I'm not sure what good it would do without custom couplers to match? I'd like to get my hands on them to see.
They maybe just for looks on the Atlas Evans box cars? ( to look like the longer cushioned coupler boxes?)

If you want PROTOTYPICAL look at Prototcraft. Nothing about the trip pin on Kadees is prototypical.

Picked up several of those. They're metal and are a great replacement for the extended (shock-control) draft boxes on Weaver mechanical reefers (had two of them break already).
The one I have has the scale wheels and is the more recent version( no back porch).

Thanks Boss!
Figures they were custom made for your fleet.
I'm browsing through the kadee site and noticed #740 says 818 draft gear box. Is that what I should be using, or should I be using the #805 with #817 gearbox? Still totally new at this, so forgive me for the slight confusion.
Some of the variations are because of both metal or plastic used for the coupler and or the box. I would recommend using the new design couplers for better looks with their built in spring and more realistic coupler.
I would also recommend using the plastic version of the box to isolate the chassis. 745
