Hello everyone

Would like some imput on the most reliable Lionel SD's and GP's. I have a GP20 dummy and I am looking to add an engine along with 11 cars for a total of 13. I don't really want to go bigger than a GP38 or SD45 and Love the look of the SD18. Could someone who knows about Lionel engines give me some insite. What years to look at, which models, new ones vs older ones. Thanks Gary

If you're looking for basic TMCC-1 electronics then the late 90's, postwar style GP's were very reliable. I have both the B&O passenger scheme and the UP GP and neither have ever had an issue. These have railsounds 2.5 and pulmor motors.

If you want the latest and greatest, the Legacy GP-7's (see my existing thread) from 2008 catalog are tough to beat. Great sound and full lighting package. Probably have to look for a pre-owned one at this point. The latest models, I believe, have lost a few of the lighting and sound features found in the 2008 models.

Mike
