I have a 4x12 layout with a simple 0-36 Atlas track loop. The layout has scenery, TMCC. What would be the best steam engine, from any manufacturer, to pull six Santa Fe scale reefers, or five MTH heavyweights (green and black)?

At the moment I use the Warhorse hudson for the passenger cars, and a Lionel starter set 0-8-0 for the reefers. The layout time period is set in the late 1940's.

I would prefer a scale engine, or a semi-scale with add-on details. More than say, a postwar 2055. I realize a Lionel Northern is out of the question, but I'd like something bigger than an Atlantic.

Any opinions or thoughts would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Are you referring to the Baldwin 4-6-0 Steamer by Williams?

How is the sound and steam?

Yes, the Williams Baldwin 4-6-0.

The sound is limited to a "canned" crossing warning - long, long, short, long - and a bell. The steam is from a Seuthe smoke unit - a continuous wisp, not near the output of MTH/Lionel engines.

The engine does respond well to TMCC control, as well as conventional transformer control.

I will have to add my vote to the MTH Imperial Northern, Santa Fe, Item # 30-1562-1. It maybe hard to find, Trainworld showed them @ $389.99 but did not list quantity available. It would Look Great pulling either your Passenger cars, Reefers or a FAST frieght.

This is a semi-scale model, with excellent detailing, the tender truck safety chains, may not be an Expensive add-on, but they sure do look Nice. Adding DCS in the future would really add to your enjoyment of this locomotive.

I model/collect Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, I had no intention of buying a Santa Fe locomotive. One day, while doing some (Iron)Horse trading at my LTS(Whistle Stop Trains, Portland, OR) I saw this locomotive in the display case, I just kept going back and admiring it. Finally I just said, Charley, what do I need to add to the trade stock to take that MTH Northern Home? I now have some Santa Fe in my roster.

Here is a video of it from MTH

I think that you will be very Happy with it, if you can find one,

HI brr,

I would suggest you look at the Lionel 6-11117, Santa Fe 4-4-2 Atlantic, from the 2007 catalog, along with the other recommendations, that have been posted.  It is a scale locomotive which tracks very nicely on 031 and has Legacy features.  I have one which has performed flawlessly since I unpacked it.  It might be the locomotive for which you are looking.
