A now closed train shop in the west Chicago suburbs had a wall of the owner's collection of NYC Hudsons.  With recent mentions of

"Big Boys" including a K-Line one, I was wondering how these differ in size and how the various versions would look lined up side by

side.  Are there scale ones and less than scale ones?  Probably somebody collects these and could post a picture of them lined up.

I recommend a search.  There are a lot of threads about Big Boys.

 

"who has a legacy big boy and can actually measure" should be in the results.  The Lionel TMCC version and Legacy version have pictures of the two in the thread.  I posted those.  I love the Legacy BB, I can't wait to get my VL versions.

 

The K Line version is much smaller than a scale version.  Seem to recall these being about the size of S gauge.

 

 

There are many different models of the Big Boy.  The K-line model was closer to S-gauge.  There is a MTH Railking version that was semi-scale and larger than the K-Line, but still about five inches shorter than scale, and the Lionchief version from Lionel that was may be 3/4 inch longer than the RK version that was quite nice, and Premier (MTH) and JLC (Lionel) versions that were scale and the same size.  I've had all of those: the Lionchief and JLC are bes in my opinion.  There is a Lionel Vison scale version coming out later this month.  Probably there have been other models, too. 

6-28029 from 1999 was an early Lionel scale big boy, and arguably still a great looking engine. Nicely detailed. Early TMCC, no odyssey, no puffing smoke, no fatboy speaker however. 

Great candidate for a super chuffed upgrade and an 18 ohm element. 

 

Someone posted maybe a year ago a great picture of six or eight various scale and non scale big boys on a multi level display rack. It really showed the amazing size differences that have been offered. 

 

Personally my my favorite would be a 12" to the foot model, but regrettably I just don't have the room on the layout! I'll have to settle for the VL version.

That's the one I got.......these locomotives are great for us conventional runners......they are a LOT cheaper that many current Big Boys....mine was under $500 delivered.

That was a very good comparison. As far as I'm concerned, the MOST CORRECT UP 4000 class model ever produced in O Scale, 3-Rail has been the Sunset/3rd Rail "Anniversary Series" models of 4023 and 4024.

Someday I hope to add one to my collection.

I run conventional only, Hot Water. When run conventionally, TMCC locos do run, but many of them jackrabbit on starting and do not respond linearly to the throttle or run smoothly at really low speeds.  

 

By contrast, Legacy locos, particularly those made in the last few years, since Lionel started listing a bullet point in their catalogs that says "Refined conventional transformer control Mode with lower starting speeds" for Legacy, they start very smoothly with no jerking, and run slowly, smoothly, in conventional.  The difference is quite remarkable and definately worth the difference in cost.  I have some older TMCC locos and several new TMCC 3rd Rail locos, such as ATSF 2929, and the ToT on order, but I buy these for the model.

Since this has been posted already, I don't have to hunt down the link, but this is what came to mind.  It's a very good photo of the different sizes.

I have the K-Line BB, and love it.  Yes, it's smaller size, and I didn't know just how small until I took it to a friend's house that had the MTH RailKing version.  It really made my BB seem tiny.   But I love the BB and love my K-Line BB as much.  It's a great runner and pulls a ton.
