Traveling home from Central Kansa to our home here in Springfied on Hiway 400 and getting close to Pittsburg, Ks, I saw the sign for Big Brutus.  Having passed this sign many times, I decided to see Big Brutus.  We turned South off 400 on to Hiway 7 and found Big Brutus, the second largest electric shovel in the world.  Built for the SW Kansas coal field strip mines by Bucyrus-Erie for the Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Co.  How big is big? If you would build an O-Scale model, you would have a 40 inch tall model, something Leaving Tracks would build. We were impressed.

You can visit the website:  www.bigbrutus.org  Enjoy your visit.  A foot note, Kansas at one time supplied 33% of coal for the United States.
