While my 2 rail layout is waiting for a larger space, I would like to share with you another current project; I hope it has its place on your forum because it shows something out of the USA!

The city where I live in France (Lyon) has several passengers stations, but one is for me the most attractive; its name is LYON PERRACHE (Perrache was an architect who re-built a big area in the city and he gave his name to this area where the station was built).

This station had been built at the end of the 19th century.

And I wanted to reproduce this station; but this building is huge: 210 meters long! in O scale (1/43 in France), you find 4,90 meters!! So I had to reduce to obtain something more acceptable, while keeping the general appearance.

I give you some aspects of the real station, of the 3D model and of some parts of the model itself. When you read "LYP", it means: Lyon Perrache!

Hope you will like

3: main hall

Thanks, Alan!

Before the pictures, some explanations; the walls are made of cardboard 3 mm thick; the windows frame cardboard 1 mm thick, all cut one by one with an x-acto....and a pair of compasses with a blade for the circular parts; Each window is made of 3 parts: inside frame, windowpane and outside frame, all is held together by a double side adhesive tape; the windowpane is made with a printed transparent sheet for overhead projector. All is fitted in the opening of the wall. The first photo shows you the entrance of the restaurant (in construction). The others, the restaurant itself and the ceiling.

Thanks, Pat!

Another part of the station is the roof above the tracks and platforms (in french: "verrière"; I don't find the good translation in english so I call it roof!). So this roof is made of metal girders which support wood plank and above corrugated iron and on the top transparent parts made of polycarbonate (I believe!); this roof was renovated a few years ago.

On the model, the girders are made of 2 strips of styrène in "T" shape 3 mm high connected by strips 1,5 mm wide and 0,5 mm thick. Boring work, but I think the result is not too bad.

The first picture is a (little) part of the real roof

I agree Tom. Train Sheds were very popular at one time in the US. They are still in use but very few remain. See below several renditions. The last photo may look familiar to some of you- From our own Alan Arnolds layout.

I show you some plans, so you can have an idea of the main dimensions of the model; sorry, but these dimensions are in millimeters (when I made these plans two years ago I didn' know that I will subscribe to an US forum!!!)
