I go out of my way to NOT purchase from retailers who are open on Thanksgiving Day. Also those who like to open at 5 or 6 PM in the evening on Thanksgiving Day. You're not fooling anyone. Yes, I'm old. How can you tell?
They're Offering great deals all weekend long!!

Perhaps a word of appreciation for all the public safety people (police and firefighters), medical people, and those who support them is in order. Many of them will be working on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, covering all shifts.
That's just the obvious people you think of. What about all the IT production software support, air traffic controllers, pilots, flight attendants, ground crew, utility crews, gas station attendants in NJ where they have to pump your gas, hotel workers, like bellmen, front desk, housekeeping, etc... I can think of a ton more in the medical field alone. Its not just retail.
A lot of people have to work because the world doesn't just shutdown for the holiday as much as I or anyone else may want it to.
Between my wife and myself over many jobs/careers between us over the many years, any Thanksgiving at least one of us doesn't have to work for any part of it gives us something extra to be thankful for and enjoy our families like everyone else.
Have a great Thanksgivings!

I guess deployed military personnel, DOD civilians, DOD contractors and military personnel that must work to support on going operations don't count either.
then there are the folks in the entertainment industry, those who work in movie theaters, restaurants, etc. They'll be on the job on Thanksgiving.
The only folks that are sure to have Thanksgiving weekend off are retired. I work in manufacturing, and I'll be at work on Thanksgiving. Our customers are worldwide, and our holidays mean nothing to them.
I recently read a book about gold mining in Cripple Creek, CO in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Labor Day and the 4th. of July were days off. Most mines worked half-days on Christmas. We live in an ever-changing world.
While I don't "shop" on Thanksgiving, many people do. Some businesses pay their employees quite well to work it. Mine does, and it's voluntary. If you don't have any family nearby, and don't watch football, work can sometimes be much better than sitting at home doing nothing.
I've got my eye on an engine from Trainland, and I hope they have a nice black Friday sale on it, because I'll be able to afford it.
