Hey Everyone, I just pulled out my UP Heritage "KATY" SD70ACe to give her a couple of runs around the track in anticipation of my new KATY that was due to arrive on Friday. I'm planning on Lashing them for a while and just plain ol' running around the track. When I put the train on the cab lights never went on, the ditch lights operated for a while, then suddenly the ditch lights stopped operating and the cab lights started blinking off and on repeatedly. I tried resetting her several times, I even changed the transformer but to no avail. With this info does anyone have an idea what I might have done? Any info on my situation would be deeply appreciated, and Thanks. - MARSHELANGELO

What brand of Loco is it? Lionel, MTH, or?????
I'm sorry Carl, I forgot to mention it's a Lionel Legacy.
The Lionel diagnosis is...
Number of Blinks Diagnostic Code Description
1 Main drive motor stalled.
2 Smoke 1 element problem.
3 Smoke 1 fan problem.
4 Not applicable.
5 Not applicable
Also it has it in the manual. Hope this helps.
laz, I really didn't count the blinks because they were continuous, the train smokes like a champ however her volume of smoke sort of oozed out of the stack once she started acting up, I'm going to take a closer look at her this evening(hopefully, but no later than tomorrow evening)and check out her internal makeup and evaluate. thanks
you need to count the blinks and look above for the code.
also the 6- number might help.
You started a topic just in time. I'm having the same problem with a Lionel Legacy Steam Engine I have that Blinks 4 times in the cab. And in the manual says 4 is Not Applicable. What does not applicable mean?
For what I've just seen, it appears to be a constant single blink blink. I've just noticed that my ditch lights to work and my rear back up lights aren't on either. I need to investigate further.
Both of you folks need to include the specific Lionel model number for accurate diagnosis.
As JOHN had said with the model number.
If it is a one blink and a Main drive motor stalled, could be a simple fix of tightening of the motor mount screws, this had happened to me and the motor screws were loose. Also the ground to could be off or loose.
Also, assuming it's one blink, some Lionel Legacy diesels have an issue with the drive gear getting seized up in the truck, usually as the result of the gear lubricant originally applied in that part of the mechanism going bad/solidifying. I've had this problem on two such diesels.
The trucks twist off in the usual way but the ground wire to them is usually too short to make it easy to get at the top. Otherwise however and fortunately this is not a very involved piece of maintenance.
The 6-28263 is an early generation legacy diesel. The flash codes do not apply to this locomotive. I think the first step should be to open her up and see if any of the boards have become unseated or look for a broken wire connection.
Greg,
It is a first Gen Legacy as FMC states, so the blinking of the cab light is probably a strobe setting action from the R4LC. Please go to program mode, set the Engine ID, then hit AUX1, +2 to set the operation. It probably will fix your loco.
ENG, ##, SET, AUX1, 2

Jon I think you may have hit the nail right on the head.
Gents, your expertise is deeply appreciated, I will put your info to use this evening when I get home, and thanks a lot .... I do hope it hits the nail on the head hard. - MARSHELANGELO
Greg, that's why we ask for the model number.
And John, that's why I responded ASAP because you, FMC, SantaFeFan, Hancock52 and all of the other guys who responded to this request and all of the other gentlemen who have helped me before are the people that I have faith in. When I ask a question, I just wait because the info I need, I KNOW is on the way. I'm not smooching up, just telling the truth, hopefully with my time and experience, in the future maybe I can help someone like you guys have always helped me. Thanks again - GREG

Yes, agreed; you cannot get better advice than straight from the software writer's mouth!
Good luck Greg and I hope you'll tell us soon the problem's solved.
I WILL DEFINITELY LET YOU GUYS KNOW, THANKS
Gents, I tip my hat to all of you, the 5 step input worked like a charm. The Ditch lights went back on, the cab light went on and didn't blink anymore, the backup lights went back on, however the ditch lights don't oscillate when I sound the train horn and my train doesn't smoke hardly, almost to the point where the smoke just oozes out. The fascinating thing is that once I did the input that SantaFeFan told me to utilize the horn sounded and the train lit up like she was brand new. Now, I told all of you that I would let y'all know that my initial problem has been solved. Can I ask you all to reach into the knowledge base once more and give me a solution to get my ditch lights blinking again and my smoke unit working. Both of these were working in the few minutes that my train had started running 2 days ago and then suddenly they quit. Help me here and if y'all ever get married again I'll dance at your weddings. Seriously though I appreciate your help and your knowledge getting me back to where I'm at with this train now and I wanted to say again THANK YOU. I'll check back and forth if you have any tips on my lingering situation. - MARSHELANGELO
Hold the AUX2 key down for a couple of seconds and the aux lighting menu will come up. See if there are some ditch light options on that menu.
Regarding the smoke output, have you upped it to the "high" setting using the remote? If you have a CAB 2 the key corresponds to the former Aux 1, 9 and on pressing it the screen should show if you are set to low, medium or high. Pressing again will cycle to the next setting.
GRJ mentioned the Aux 2 function. The page from the Legacy manual (latest edition I can find) copied below shows what the keypad should look like when you access this. (I assume all Legacy engines, including your early version, have this feature.) However, I do notice that this shows ditch light controls as present on the main keypad without having to access the Aux 2 option!

The menu varies a bit, but you should get the corresponding menu if you've loaded the orange Legacy engine module.
I did come upon the Aux 2 function button's menu and it turned the front and rear headlights on and off. The menu had the Aux 2 icon in the #2 button position and I did see other icons but I couldn't identify them and their function because I had no resource material and I couldn't find it in the Legacy Manual I had and I was getting ready to hit the road for work. I looked at the pdf provided by Hancock and I'll see if the #3 and #6 button will help it strobe again. And I did have the smoke output on high but when I gave it a quick run early this morn the smoke output was the same. I did earlier change the transformer from the KW to the CW-80 to see if I was having a Sine Wave incident but I put my KW back in place but time was still and issue.
this is from the legacy manual all icons will not show up all the time.
ditch lights are on page 2

You can also tinker with the contents of the lighting menu with the LSU. That's not to say you'll be able to get the lights working, but I did have to use the LSU to clear out an engine entry so I could use it again.
Gd Morning Gents, after getting settled down after coming in from work yesterday and watching the Miami Heat and the World Series I got up this morning with one focus and got onto my small lingering situation. I put the train on the track, accessed the Aux2 menu and the strobe on & strobe off buttons didn't solve my problem (buttons 6 & 9), it was actually the ditch lights on the main menu that had them blink on and off while the train moved, so for now I'm tentatively satisfied, I still have a smoke issue but it's one that I'll tackle at a later date. Perhaps I need to check inside and take a closer look at the smoke unit and the batting but for now I would again like to say Thank You to all of you for providing and sharing your knowledge.
