Most hardware and paint stores can computer customize paint colors given a proper sample.
I have had very good outcomes with the Hobby Horse paint. Goes on nice and dries quickly. http://www.hobbyhorseproducts.com/paint.html

I have seen the various manufacturers treat the rear of the observation cars differently. Ie., all blue or brass rail with red valance. Anybody have any idea what was on the prototype? Thanks.
RICH B,
Most suppliers that sell automotive paint can match most any color. They do this through a computer matching program. They mix your paint and even put it into spray cans for you. This service provides you with a copy of the paint mix formula.
I used a automotive paint shop to color match paint for my PE project.
I like Krylon paints. Here is their Blue Chart.
Are you looking to match a factory model or the prototype?
i ask because not a single rr manufacturer has yet to capure the depth and gloss of Packard Blue even though it is a pretty well known color in the auto world.
i would suggest referencing Bob Fischer's CNJ steam book for details about the variations over time in The Blue Comet locomotive paint and lettering.
For me, I am living with the latest MTH G-3 but someday hope to either repaint and reletter one following the prototype or (big wish) see Scott Mann or Weaver produce the world's first authentic Blue Comet train set (it has never been done in any scale, where details and paint matched).

Well there are endless shades of blue comet paint! If you are redoing the whole set then I would second hobby horse. Their paints come in aerosol, you will get a decent match with the least hassle.
You will never get a good match off the shelf. Just do it right the first time! Good luck!
BUT! Does anybody have a clue how the rear of the observation cars were treated??? Was the valance blue as well? Or a red material that I have seen on some models? Was the railing polished brass like the models with the red valance? Or painted blue as was the rest of the train? Trying to get as close as I can to the prototype in this regard. Hard to tell from B&W photos but thought someone would have some knowledge on this. Thanks again.

This would be a good question to pose the owners of the two Blue Comet obs that have recently had exterior restoration done. Both of them have painted railings in their restored state, but their owners may have uncovered research as to their original states.
thanks for all of the suggestions,i decided on rustoleum blue maui and navy blue.used a 249e 2 607 pass car ,608 obs. car also a 655 box car as a blue comet box car .lettered the cars in gold, and box car decaled similiar to the mth comet box car.finishing up the 249e ,now .when done ,will try to post pictures.needless to say i m happ y with them.again thanks
