I have a number of hours to kill in Chicago on Sunday the 20th, between my arrival on the Lake Shore Limited, and my flight back home to Atlanta.

For anyone who has been there recently, is the area relatively safe? Thinking of riding the Rock Island line to Blue Island-Vermont and taking an Uber across the river to the junction.

The last time I was there, I was in my own car. The area looked a bit sketchy, but no one bothered me. Of course, having had a vehicle, I could have escaped a lot easier than if I’m on foot.

I welcome other recommendations, but please know that I’m after freight trains. I have less-than-zero interest in taking photos or videos of Amtrak or commuters.

Thanks in advance. 🙏

I was just there in May.  They area is pretty much the same as you remember it.  I never felt unsafe, but I had my own car.  I lived in Chicago and while I didn't mind going to Blue Island to railfan, I definitely wouldn't just hang around there without a way to leave if need be.  I was never bothered any time I was there, but why invite trouble.  Your best bet is to take a Metra train or uber to west chicago.  You would have the UP Geneva Sub and the CN (ex EJ&E) crossing right there.  Being a weekend, the Metra action will be less, leaving more time for freight.  If you're there in the afternoon, the sun will favor westbounds for the UP line.  The area is very safe.
