Various railfan media sites are reporting today that BNSF will take over Montana Rail Link’s operations. While some are calling it a “sale” to BNSF, it’s really an agreement with MRL to terminate its long term lease from BNSF. FYI.
Part of me feels this is the start of a snowball of small consolidations to get ducks in a row before the next attempted group of mega-mergers in response to the KCS-CP deal.
Interesting. I remember Warren McGee at an NPRHA convention years ago that BN should have kept that line rather than letting MRL take it, since the old NP line in Montana had many more on-line industries to serve (and hence more revenue) than the GN had on their farther north line.
