I recently bought a new, hardbound copy of Sam Posey's (the race car driver who retired from racing and became a sportscaster for ABC and unfortunately became afflicted with Parkinson's) 2004 book about model railroading entitled, "Playing with Trains" from Amazon and it came in last Friday. I started reading it and got to the inside title page and, although the book was supposed to be new, there was a small, barely legible inscription in pen that read, "To Nick - with all my best - Sam - '04". There was also a small piece of paper about 2" X 3" with a note written on it. It was actually cut from Christmas wrapping paper and the inside, white part read, "Nick - Mr. Posey has Parkinson's disease so the inscription is small and hard to read - Love, Aunt Martha and Uncle John."
My best guess is that Posey must have had a book signing when the book came out and John and Martha went and bought a copy for Christmas for their nephew, Nick, and had Posey inscribe it and then put a note in the book to their nephew as to why the inscription was small and hard to read. Either that or they knew the author and had him inscribe it to their nephew and then put the note inside. The book appears brand new and never read - pretty neat history, though.
The package had no return address on it - just a regular "prime" box.
Very interesting - not sure if I should do anything or just keep it in my collection.
