I recently bought a new, hardbound copy of Sam Posey's (the race car driver who retired from racing and became a sportscaster for ABC and unfortunately became afflicted with Parkinson's) 2004 book about model railroading entitled, "Playing with Trains" from Amazon and it came in last Friday. I started reading it and got to the inside title page and, although the book was supposed to be new, there was a small, barely legible inscription in pen that read, "To Nick - with all my best - Sam - '04". There was also a small piece of paper about 2" X 3" with a note written on it. It was actually cut from Christmas wrapping paper and the inside, white part read, "Nick - Mr. Posey has Parkinson's disease so the inscription is small and hard to read - Love, Aunt Martha and Uncle John."
My best guess is that Posey must have had a book signing when the book came out and John and Martha went and bought a copy for Christmas for their nephew, Nick, and had Posey inscribe it and then put a note in the book to their nephew as to why the inscription was small and hard to read. Either that or they knew the author and had him inscribe it to their nephew and then put the note inside. The book appears brand new and never read - pretty neat history, though.
The package had no return address on it - just a regular "prime" box.
Very interesting - not sure if I should do anything or just keep it in my collection.

Just curious, what would you do other than keep it?

Contact Amazon and see if I could find out where it came from and contact the seller and see if it was a personal keepsake that got sent out by mistake or try to track down Nick, Aunt Martha or Uncle John and ask the same question.

Just by posting it here on the Forum, someone may have some information about it's source.

Given the right info, I would not be hesitant to return it if it was a personal keepsake.

When you bought the book, was it from inventory that was shipped and sold by Amazon, from another dealer that supplies Amazon for shipping, or from an Amazon dealer who sells and ships directly?

If it was the latter, you can contact the dealer and get more information quite easily.

It was from a third-party seller, but the book came in Amazon packaging.

I tracked down their info, so I can contact them.

You are going to give the book a good home so I would keep it and enjoy it.

I have several books with notes/documentation attached to them. My favorite one is "Our Wild Orchids: Trails and Portraits" by F. Morris & E. Eame (1929). I have the original receipt, a Newspaper clipping of the book, and a love note saying "to the fairest orchid in my garden, my wife."

I like to think we are preserving little bits of history but that is just my two cents.
