Thought I do own both types, personally, I prefer the brass over diecast.  I find them much more to my liking overall.  You can always add or subtract items on a brass unit, whereas on the diecast its not easily feasible.

Indeed.

Like perhaps a lot of you, I spent a good deal of time grinding off details on cast metal boilers when I was into HO; can't imagine doing that in O scale...and I much prefer soldering over glueing; although JB Weld certainly comes in handy sometimes...🙂

Just for comparison, here's one of the earlier #4949s:

In all fairness, the 4949 has not been weathered, so the details (such as they are) don't stand out so much.

This particular example is a combination of the best bits of the 2 samples I have, so it runs pretty well and the superstructure is in decent shape. Both of them have had the slower (better) #555 Mabuchi motors installed. I don't know if I will be putting 555s in the other engines, as they both run very well as is...

1. I have a 4949 Pacific (Undecorated) that comes from that time frame.  It's probably the same model mentioned by Jonathon (@GG1 4877) up above.

2.  Although it has a DC can motor it growls just like an AC Pulmor-powered die cast Lionel steamer.  Details are sparse; those that are there have quite a bit of flash, and more than a few rough edges.

3.  Although I was expecting much more I didn't pay a lot for it.  That may be the saving grace.

1. Me too.

2. Interesting; my examples are very quiet runners: I did have to make some adjustments, but still. Swapping the original motor(s) for the Mabuchi #555 made a big difference as well; really "calmed them down", speed-wise.

3. Me too...also! 😊
