I'm posting this here since the subject fits the tinplate bill closer than any other. This swap meet find was one of a number of brass O scale engines purchased last weekend. I'm not fond of brush on paint jobs, so......
Just couldn't wait to strip off all that mess and de-Canadianize the old girl.
Unlike the usual mid century offerings with solid cast boilers, it's almost all sheet brass. While the wheels are cast brass, none have steel tires.
The poorly aligned hand rail stanchions and running boards give the illusion of a sway back boiler. Although it's nothing compared to today's precision models, with a little tricking out it could be made acceptable
Under the hood, the open frame DC motor can be made to run quietly and smoothly, but there are only a few sweet spots. It doesn't seem to have had any bad knocks as the wheels run true. If anyone knows the origin of this kit or whether the Atlantic follows a prototype, please enlighten me.
