99 44/100% Lionel  (There's a KLine PRR 520 type in there, a PRR Beep, and a PRR Williams E60 Body)

100 +/- Modern Era Diesels/Electrics

 65 +/- Modern Era Steamers

 27 Postwar Diesels/Electrics

 20 Postwar Steamers

This doesn't include small powered units like Handcars, Inspection Vehicles, Vulcan Switchers, Trackmobiles, TMCC Crane, Burro Crane, Tie Jector, Trolleys etc.

Don't forget I'm a PRR by Lionel collector first, and an operator second.

Here we go..  All but 1 are NYC!

Lionel:  25 powered / 9 non-powered (65%)

MTH:    5 powered / 3 non-powered   (15%)

K-Line: 4 powered / 0 non-powered   (8%)

Atlas:   3 powered / 0 non-powered   (6%)

WBB:   1 powered / 1 non-powered   (4%)

Marx:   1 powered          (2%)

Now, let's talk reality... I don't run the MTH, other than the PA1s that I had converted to TMCC...

Thanks,

Mario

There’s a big difference in manufacturer breakdown between the engines in my collection and the engines that I run on my layout.

Of the 113 engines owned:

  • Lionel = 85%
  • American Flyer = 4%
  • K-Line = 6%
  • MTH = 3%
  • Marx = 2%

Of the 15 engines I am running on the Layout:

  • Lionel = 53%
  • K-Line = 27%
  • MTH = 20%

I included all of my powered diesel, electric and steam locomotives plus only the motorized units that have a coupler and can pull a train.  Therefore not included are the non-powered dummies and many motorized units, especially my trolleys, 5 of which are MTH.  But all 3 of the MTH engines I own are run on the layout.

Digging down a little deeper, roughly 50% of all engines are post-war Lionel but I only run 1 of those engines.

MTH: 5 PS2

        1 PS3

Lionel: 1 TMCC (ERR conversion)

         15 conventional

         1 non powered

Mark: 5 powered

         3 non powered

K-line: 2 conventional

Williams: 1 conventional

         1 non powered

All but the Mark's I can run on my big layout, they don't like the Atlas switches but I will run them on my ceiling layout with fast track.

I was curious about how these totals stacked up, so I entered all the counts given into MS Excel.  Twelve people gave only the percentages of each they own, not the total that those are percentages of. I assumed these had the same number of locos as the average of the others (they have 52 each), figured out their counts and then totaled it up by manufacturer.  Here are the totals I got.  It is consist with my impression over the past several years.

Just how it worked out, if it is an engine I want, it doesn't matter who makes it.

Planned to be Lionel only originally.  I wanted to buy one operating system for simplicity.  Already had a few Lionel locos at the time.

Got a great deal on 4 MTH engines as a package.  Too good to pass up, so I bought them.  Engines Lionel never produced.  Had to have them!

Now I understand why some have both operating systems.

I'm impressed by all 3 brands, each has something I like.

Here are updated statistics reflecting everyone who has reported so far.

  • 71 people have reported what they own
  • 15 of those reported only the percentages, not the actual numbers they own.
  • of the other 56 who reported actual numbers owned, the maximum was 377, the minimum 4 (actually 3 with one on order).  The average person reporting numbers reported owning 51 locos.
  • For those who reported only percentages, I assumed they each owned 51, and worked out the counts for them for each manufacturer.
  • Lionel totaled 53% of all locos reported.  However this includes pre-war,  post-war, and MPC era locos.  Not all people reported Lionel broken out by postwar/pre-war, etc., but I estimated the total overall for the group who did and extrapolated that to the large whole.  The 13% number should be considered an estimate, but the more I think of it, I think its a pretty good estimate: about one out of every eight toy locos is old.  Seems about right.
  • Below, "LNL - old" means pre-war, postwar, and MPC period Lionels.  LNL-new means after MPC.
