So I have a Norfolk & Western J class 4-8-4 with PS2 that I pull out every year to run around our Christmas tree, and I setup the full DCS protosound system to run it and a few other trains. Well this year as I was setting everything up my N&W J class worked fine for about five minutes when I was testing everything out then as I was going to park it it derailed and sparks flashed and I had to reset everything. However upon resetting everything my J class was completely non-responsive. It wont run in conventional mode, it doesn't light up, there's no sound. Nothing. I reset my TIU and the remote with no results. Both my other engines work just fine. I was able to readd the to my remote no problem after I reset everything. My track signal is 10/10, and I'm running software version 3.10 on both the TIU and the remote. My only thought is that the circuit cards inside the engine are now fried and that they Have to be replaced. Does anybody have any other suggestions that may help me?

Send a message to GGG, he has helped me on numerous occasions.
this same thing happened to me before and it was a fried board. Hopefully this isn't the case with you
The very first thing to do is to ensure that the tether is secure.
Which version is this, does it use the 8.4V battery or the 2.4V?
As Barry said, I would makes sure all is connected, and then I would try it in conventional with no TIU. If no clicking relay sound the boards need to be tested. If this is the newer PS-2 3V system, the boards may be able to be repaired at the component level. If this is the RK Set version with the PS-2 5V, most likely the board has to be replaced. My e-mail is in my profile if you need my help. G
Ok well I've tested it in conventional mode with no TIU and its still completely unresponsive, and I did make sure the tether was fully seated. It has the 8.4V battery and is most definitely running one of the earliest versions of the PS2 boards and software because the engine is at least nine years old, if not older. Which if I'm not mistaken was around the time they introduced PS2.
Dead is a very bad sign as a rule for the 5V systems, I'm 2 for about 10 trying to fix the board set. There are things you can fix, but totally dead usually is time for a funeral.
Is this the Freight set engine? Or a small bantam style? The Full RK model is worth repairing in my opinion.
The Full RK has the board in the engine. It is worth taking the shell off and seeing if the 7 pin connector is fully seated and the wire nuts for the RED and Black power leads still connected. If so and still no click of the relay as you power it up it is probably dead. G
What transformer were you utilizing? It sounds like the circuit breaker in the TIU and the transformer failed to trip.
Rugged rail is the Bantam. So this looks small vice the larger to scale versions. Probably not worth fixing, but that is up to you. G
