A few weeks ago I bought this British Joy Line loco on the bay from Jerry Loman of Sunset Train & Toys. Someone had stuffed a wrong motor in it. As you can see, it has too wide a wheel base for the cutout. Before I bid, Jerry gave me the approximate dimensions of the wheel opening and I checked my junk drawer and found a good early Marx M10000 motor that I felt would work. Feeling good about having a motor, I bid and won.

Here is what I got;

Here is the engine after slightly modifying the M10000 motor;

Now with the prewar British Marx coaches I already had, I almost have a nice outfit. No tender so I was using a small Bub tender. Today a package arrived containing a correct red E-25 tender with a note that said Merry Christmas. I had to replace the coupler pockets that had been cut off and add repro couplers, but I now have a period correct pre war British set.

Note that the clockwork bridge it is sitting on also came from Jerry in a bay buy. Anyone know who made it? The only marking is Germany stamped in the center span.

Steve, nicely done!  Great rescue project.  It's so great to have the pieces all come together.  They have found a good home... not everyone would happen to have the correct motor in a "junk" drawer!

Steve, I think your bridge may be a Karl Bub 1641/0 from 1938-39, here.

If you haven't already, check out this website, it's a goldmine of information for identifying old European trains.
